How to Hire Pre‑Vetted Data and Cloud Engineers from India in 2 Weeks
What a fast, low-risk hiring process looks like — from role definition and technical vetting to onboarding across time zones.
Zeldan Tech Engineering Team ·
India has one of the world's deepest pools of data and cloud engineers, and many enterprises in the UK, US and Europe already rely on it. Yet teams that try to hire directly often find the process slow and uneven: hundreds of CVs, inconsistent skill levels, and weeks lost to screening calls.
It doesn't have to work that way. With a clear role definition and a proper vetting process, you can have strong, pre-vetted engineers working in your team in around two weeks. Here is what that process looks like.
- Typical time from brief to start
- 2 weeks
- To receive shortlisted profiles
- 48 hrs
- Stages of technical vetting
- 3
Step 1 — Define the role by outcomes, not keywords
"Senior data engineer with Azure" describes thousands of people. "Build and own ingestion pipelines from SAP and Salesforce into a Databricks lakehouse, with Unity Catalog governance" describes the person you actually need. Outcome-based briefs lead to better shortlists and faster decisions.
- What will this person deliver in their first 90 days?
- Which tools are must-have, and which can be learned?
- How much will they work independently versus inside an existing team?
- What overlap with your time zone is genuinely required?
Step 2 — Insist on real technical vetting
The biggest risk in remote hiring isn't location — it's weak vetting. CVs and keyword filters can't tell you whether someone can debug a failing Spark job or design an incremental load. Vetting should be done by engineers who do this work themselves.
- Brief
- Sourcing
- Technical screen
- Hands-on assessment
- Client interview
- Onboarding
- Technical screen: a conversation with a practising engineer about real projects the candidate has delivered
- Hands-on assessment: a practical exercise in the actual stack — PySpark, SQL, Azure Data Factory, Databricks or the relevant cloud services
- Communication check: can they explain trade-offs clearly to a non-technical stakeholder?
Ask to see how a candidate was assessed, not just that they were. A good partner will share the areas covered and where the candidate was strongest and weakest.
Step 3 — Plan the time-zone overlap
India's working day overlaps comfortably with UK and European mornings and afternoons, and with the US East Coast in early mornings. The key is to agree the overlap window up front — usually two to four hours — and use it for stand-ups, reviews and decisions, leaving focused build time for the rest of the day.
Step 4 — Onboard like they're part of the team
- Have access, accounts and environments ready before day one
- Assign a clear owner in your team for questions and code reviews
- Share architecture docs and coding standards in the first week
- Agree a 30-day check-in to confirm fit and expectations
Step 5 — Keep flexibility in the contract
Good engagements are easy to adjust. Make sure you can scale the team up or down with reasonable notice, and that the partner will replace an engineer quickly if the fit isn't right.
How Zeldan Tech works
Zeldan Tech provides pre-vetted data, cloud and AI engineers from our delivery centre in Bengaluru, for contract, staff augmentation and permanent roles. Every candidate is assessed by practising engineers in the stack you use — Azure, Databricks, AWS, PySpark and modern AI tooling — before you see a profile.
Key takeaways
- Write the brief around outcomes, not keyword lists
- Technical vetting by practising engineers is the difference between a fast hire and a good one
- Agree a clear daily overlap window across time zones
- Treat remote engineers as part of the team from day one
- Keep the contract flexible so you can scale and replace easily
